*NEW MGG COACHING LOG POSTED HERE EVERY WEEKEND!!!!

When coming back from a meet performance be it great, good, below average or a bomb-out, every lifter re-assesses. Let me restate that…every SMART lifter re-assesses.

This past couple of weekends prior to the winter holidays members of the Maroscher Powerlifting Team/MONSTER GARAGE GYM put their training to the test at a number of competitions both local and out of state.

With the meets now a part of each individual competitor’s history books, now is the time to assess and re-assess how the training cycle went as now we have the results to tell us what needs to stay the same, needs to be edited or modified and what needs to be burned, buried and never to be done again. The other thing that will occur is that the lifters who competed will begin that process of the slow rebuilding of their foundation which will build and again crescendo at meet time as that is the cycle of how building and rebuilding occurs.

In this video, our Christmas Eve training session….I suppose I could have called this the Coaching ‘Yuletide’ Log….you will be able to see the lifters who competed as they are the ones rebuilding, in this case during this session with reps and some pause squats. Other who have yet to compete or who are deeper into their training are hitting the singles and doubles.  Coming off a meet reps and pause squats are a great way to start off that time in-between a meet and the start of a new training cycle.

The point of this log is this….if you are looking to improve finding a meet and competing will give you feedback to your training. Blindly following a method/program and not seeing if it actually works for you is still training, it is just not smart training. I often tell our newer lifters that when it came to my bigger meet and international meet wins, I was not always the strongest lifter, but I was perhaps the strongest, smart lifter as honing my training and picking my numbers based on prior meets and prior training edits gave me the advantage with regard to the biggest total in my division on meet day. Stated another way, what good is being powerful if you can’t produce on the day that your power counts. Smart training and re-assessment post-meet is a critical part of moving forward. Also critical is rebuilding your body, addressing weak points and creating a crescendo back up in strength for the next meet.

Lastly, and I could write an entire series of articles on this, a training cycle does not need to be complex. In fact, I could successfully argue, if you are still in the stage of your lifting career where you are learning about programs and training cycles and asking questions about those programs and training cycles, you would benefit the most from the most simple routine with an emphasis on working your heart out, attaining rest and proper nutrition that is commensurate to your work output. Lots of folks have complex programs, but in my two-plus decades in the world of competitive powerlifting, I can tell you that it is the lifters who are on the more basic of programs and who works their heart out that more often than not leave the platform triumphant over other lifters who got lost over dwelling in details and falling short on work-ethic.

These hard workers are the type of lifters who get to the gym, and just do their job. They work hard at their mission, they stay off their smart phone (if you are using your phone in between sets, READ THIS-->>> https://www.elitefts.com/education/putting-pen-to-paper-when-old-school-is-better-than-new-technology/ you are NOT doing everything to be the best you on the platform), their time on line is learning about the sport, nutrition and technique, not spending that precious time engaging in social media drama READ THIS-->>> https://www.elitefts.com/education/small-average-great-what-is-your-mindset/ and keeping their thoughts positive. A positive mental attitude is something the best lifters have in common. Ever heard Ed Coan put someone down or post anything negative about a lifters depth or form??? No, and I doubt you ever will.

Bottom line, take your post-meet time seriously and spend time looking back at what worked, kind of worked and did not work at all. Assess and re-assess, then train and execute.15723435_10154899229054345_6928230065557962991_o4
