All I needed to know about life, I learned in the gym - Silence the noise.
I learned early on that I had to be aware in the gym; general awareness of everything going on in the gym, spacial awareness of the area I was working in. Was the floor slick or grippy, could someone walk into my bar, will someone walk in front of my squats, if I was in a training crew were they on point or screwing around? All these things mattered because when it came time to change from just working out to training, I had to know what to expect and what could pop up.
When we do this, we put ourselves in the best possible position for when it comes time to silence the noise and focus on what we need to do.
No distractions – purpose, focus, and execution.
This is not to say the distractions can’t just be ignored, they can and should be. What I’m saying is, make those distractions things you can’t control, that are unexpected, because they are far rarer than the preventable ones.
At work and in our lives, we become very focused on distractions and slowly move away from important things that require focus and are harder to execute. Our one hour of focused time can yield an outcome of completion, or a strong move forward, that others may take days to accomplish due to all the noise in their own heads, interruptions, and distractions.
You still need to know your surroundings, have spacial awareness, but those alone are never enough. You need to create the silence to focus and execute the task.
The same way you have to focus and set PRs in the gym.
While under the bar for a max squat. You have no idea who’s in the parking lot, who’s bench pressing, what gossip is going on at the front desk. Hell, you may even forget who’s spotting because all that matters is making the lift.
How often do you find that same focus at work? With your significant other? With your kids? In your own head? You know it’s possible right?
