Like a race car, there are many gears to shift into when training. If you are limiting yourself to max effort, speed and de-load only, you are missing many of the gears that get you to your p.r. lifts.

There is a time in your training when you go full blast, and those days are the best. You look forward to them all month, and the excitement grows as the days countdown to that very training session when you can test your strength and see if the work you have put in has paid off, or if you need to modify the plan. Similar in nature, there are days when you work on the speed aspect of the game. Explosive power is a key element when it comes to success in your lifts.

Having said all that, there is also the stuff in the middle. In past coaching logs I have called that the “Nougat.” You know what I mean, that stuff in the middle of all that other good stuff. I love a good Snickers bar....Mmmmm, Snickers…. Snickers bars are peanuts and milk chocolate, but that is all held together by the Nougat, that “stuff” that holds the two big ingredients together. The Nougat is made of lots of little things….honey, whipped egg whites, sugar, etc. So you have peanuts and milk chocolate, which are both individually awesome, but for it all to come together the formula must have that important stuff in the middle. That stuff that is not the ‘star of the show,’ but without it, the whole thing kind of just falls apart.

Submaximal training aka Nougat training can be comprised of volume, lots of sets, lots of reps, lots of sets and reps, some bodybuilding type movements, even some of those old Weider-speak movements, like super-sets, as well as movements to just flush the muscles and other areas with blood and other intracellular nutrients and fluids. Submaximal work is just that, non-max effort work that is injected into your training. It is not max effort, it is not testing your strength, it is not speed work, it is not working to gain speed or explosiveness to your movements, it is an array of singles, or reps, or lots of reps, non-big-three movements, and more that holds the balance of max effort and speed together.

So just like you don’t typically go from Park right to 4th gear in your car, your training should also touch the other gears inbetween as well. Not doing so can make a lifter a one trick pony and that will work to excellerate the lifter into injury, over-training and burnout faster than you can say, “stripped gears.”

The accompanying video gives a little glimpse into the variation that is contained within submaximal, Nougat training.

Wishing you all the best in your training. Ever onward. Eric Maroscher: Monster Garage Gym
