As we have said many times before, in powerlifting there is more than one way to skin a cat. In this coaching log we show you TWO WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR DEADLIFT LOCKOUT.

DEADLIFTMGG

In the simplest of terms (I feel sometimes we make things far more complex than they really need to be), utilizing bands from the floor means the bands become tighter as the weight nears lock out, thus the weight in your hands at the top of the lift is greater than the weight you pulled off of the ground. So, if you can lock out 500LBS of pure weight, you can set the bar up with say 425LBS and with the bands at their tightest (say 100LBS of pull from the bands) at the top of the pull, you are actually locking out 525LBS, 25LBS more than your max. You can do this because the weight at the bottom is only 425LBS and you use that speed from the lighter weight to gain the momentum to lock out the heavier weight at the top. Simple, easy to set up, big time effective.

That being said, with reverse bands, the weight is assisted by the bands at the bottom so your 500LBS max can again be surpassed at the top but using bands in another way. So you can load up the weight with 525LBS (you max being 500LBS) and with the help of the bands at the bottom, that 100LBS of band help means you are only pulling 425LBS of actual weight off of the ground, but as the bands lose tension as the bar comes off the floor and they become flaccid at the top, that supportive tension is gone and the 525LBS you have on the bar is now actually 525LBS of weight, thus like the bands from the ground, you are working at the top with more weight than you could actually train with without the benefit of the bands.

In the accompanying coaching log video, you will see the contrast of these two ways to use the bands, but you will see in either method a very similar effect, and that is the lifter really struggling to lock the weight out at the top of the movement.

The take away is this….resistance bands can be used for a ton of reasons, these being two of them, and both working the top of your pull but in a way that feels very different during the movement.

If you are new to bands or not sure how to use them, study the included HD training video and you can see how we attach the bands for both reverse band work as well as resistance from the platform.

Wishing you all the best in your training. Ever onward. Eric Maroscher: Monster Garage Gym
