Right outside the heart of Boston, in Malden, MA is a small gym named Total Performance Sports. This shouldn’t be a new name to anyone who has visited, as it is owned by Elitefts coach, CJ Murphy (or as he’s more affectionately known, Murph).  Murph is a well-known and accomplished strength coach and trainer, and one of the pioneers of strongman in the United States. Murph has been implementing strongman into his training and developing athletes in the sport for more than a decade.

This is TPS’s third location, and though it isn’t as big as the previous location, it has a sense of personability that many gyms of this caliber don’t have. Personal training clients have a section reserved for themselves, while powerlifters and strongman competitors have a playground of high quality equipment and implements to train on.

Many of the athletes entered the doors at TPS as beginners to strength training, usually partaking in a class known as “Butts and Guts”, but soon find their way into the more advanced training of sports like strongman and powerlifting. As you can tell by the plethora of trophies lining the wall as you walk in the entrance, they churn out champions. TPS is one of the best gyms in the country, with the accolades and athletes to prove it. Do yourself a favor if you’re ever in the Boston area, and drop in to train here. You won’t be disappointed.
