Training Talk with Dr. Anatoliy Bondarchuk

by

"I’ve done training talks with dozens of the best coaches and athletes around the world. But while I talk to him often about training, I have yet to sit down for a training talk with the one man that has influence my thoughts on training the most: my coach for ten year Dr. Anatoliy Bondarchuk. Part of the reason is that I am now more interested in learning new viewpoints. Another reason is that answering the same old questions can frustrate the old man. But with the help of Yosef Johnson and Jake Jensen I was finally able to get him on the record about some questions are of interest to myself and should be of interest to coaches from any sport." - Martin Bingisser

Repeated-Sprint Athletes: Energy Systems & Training

by Eric Oetter

"In recent years, a large number of industry debates have focused on which methods should be employed while training repeated-sprint athletes. Some propose the concept of sport-specificity, utilizing only techniques that mirror the on-field movement demands of the athlete, while others rely on more generic, interval-based training to develop the energy systems. In the 2011 review Repeated-Sprint Ability – Part II: Recommendations for Training, Bishop et al. aim to assess the validity of these methods and others in hopes to form a consensus on the most effective protocol." - Eric Oetter

Specialization, training volume and talent development

by Ross Tucker, PhD

"Yesterday I started what I hope is an interesting and thought-provoking series that addresses the issue of how we view and manage the process of sports talent development in young children.  I looked at a recent study of Danish elite and near-elite athletes where the authors concluded that “There is no delay in the athletic development that cannot be made up later with late specialization”." - Ross Tucker

Resist The Urge To Over-Coach

by Positive Coaching Alliance Development Zone

"One key aspect to game time play is an athlete’s ability to implement lessons learned in practice and to self-guide. Coaches who try to dictate all that happens during the game aren’t letting their players take control and grow as independent athletes. It’s part of the learning process to translate skills learned to game time, and the coach can play an important role preparing players during game prep and then positively reinforcing these efforts during game time."
