RELENTLESS BENCH TRAINING...PART II
RELENTLESS BENCH TRAINING...PART II
Does it take courage to have 900LBS over your throat and bench it??? Although that answer is a resounding YES, the men pressing 900LBS in this log know without question that the children they are preparing to compete for are far more courageous, as on a daily basis they face the fears that come with their life-threatening illnesses…..here is what we mean…..
POWERFUL MUTHAZ ON FATHER'S DAY
POWERFUL MUTHAZ ON FATHER'S DAY
Father’s Day at the M.G.G. was a day with big squats, strongman training and ended with a 975LB 2-board press. This coaching log is a salute to the Father’s out there who balance their training, work, spirituality and family in a way where that allows them the honor of being called, “Dad.” ….Here is what we mean….
RELENTLESS TRAINING
RELENTLESS TRAINING
Sometimes one powerlifts for the love of lifting, sometimes to test their mettle in competition, sometimes to chase titles or records, but sometimes one powerlifts for those who can’t and perhaps that is the most noble of reasons….. Here is what we mean….
The Hybrid Deadlift Stance
The Hybrid Deadlift Stance
In deadlifting, the Goldilocks Zone might not be pulling conventional, nor sumo, nor even Old English Style. For those lifters, what I call the hybrid sumo stance could perhaps be best.

WORLD RECORDS AND AFRO-PUFFS, PART II
Records are made to be broken, and when you break all of them in your class, that is a fairly rare accomplishment. But sometimes just getting to and through the meet is the real achievement….Here is Part II of World Records and Afro-Puffs….

The Gift of Perspective: Things to Know as a New Powerlifter, Lessons 11-14
The Gift of Perspective: Things to Know as a New Powerlifter, Lessons 11...
We've covered the first ten perspectives for new lifters. Now it's time to get more specific about what it takes to break through the beginning stages of powerlifting.
THE COMPLEXITY OF THE BENCH SHIRT
THE COMPLEXITY OF THE BENCH SHIRT
Initially a piece of safety gear to protect the lifter (like a belt and knee wraps), the bench shirt has changed, progressed and evolved into a highly sophisticated part of the geared lifters’ world. In the hands of an experienced shirted-lifter, the bench shirt can be an advantageous tool toward a larger total. In the hands of a lifter lacking that experience, guidance and user-know-how, the shirt can at best leave them shaking their head, or at worst, leave them injured.
TRAIN LIKE YOU ARE GOING TO COMPETE
TRAIN LIKE YOU ARE GOING TO COMPETE
How you train in the gym is paramount to your success….or your failure at the meet. Warm-ups and the sets that lead up to your working sets require the same attention to detail as the working sets…..Here is why….

EASTER EGGS AND MONOLIFTS
EASTER EGGS AND MONOLIFTS
Heavy weight is the desired main course. To that end come the various ingredients that help create this main course...one of them being often neglected and always dreaded, high rep days. Neglecting the little weights can compromise progress toward the big weights…..here is what we mean….
RAW HYBRID DEADLIFTS
RAW HYBRID DEADLIFTS
Some deadlifters prefer conventional, some prefer sumo, some can pull equally well with both. But what if you are a deadlifter who isn’t comfortable with either? Perhaps hybrid deadlifts would benefit you. Here is what we mean….

GREEN EGGS AND DEADZ
GREEN EGGS AND DEADZ
Deadlifting can be a smorgasbord instead of just a meal if you are willing to open up to something new. Here is what we mean by that...
WHY BIG GUYS USE LITTLE WEIGHTS
WHY BIG GUYS USE LITTLE WEIGHTS
...the highlight reels are heavy and hard core, but what the big boys have learned a long time ago is in order to be able to put up the big numbers, you have to also put the time in with the not so big numbers….here is what we mean….
WHEN THE SILENCE IS DEAFENING
WHEN THE SILENCE IS DEAFENING
...when the crowd of a thousand cheers at the ARNOLD can’t seem to drown out the sound of the silence from the single voice that is missing. It is during these times in our lifting journey when lifting can be a savior...
IT STARTS WITH THE MIND
IT STARTS WITH THE MIND
GREAT minds, discuss ideas….AVERAGE minds, discuss events….SMALL minds, discuss people. Contrary to standard thinking, being successful in the world of powerlifting does not start in the gym, being successful in the world of powerlifting starts in your mind…..and here is why…..
FRIENDSHIPS FORGED IN STEEL

Our differences pale in comparison to our similarities. The time-wasting thrust and parry of debating RAW vs gear or federation X vs federation Y only serves to distract us from the goal, becoming STRONG(ER).

“So, should I use linear periodization, undulating periodization, nonlinear, the Bulgarian method, the abracadabra-presto-super-gains routine??? “How long have you been training?” “Six months.” "Then, PICK THE WEIGHT UP, PUT THE WEIGHT DOWN RIGHT WHERE YOU FOUND IT. Now, repeat."
THE EMERGING WOMENS' DIVISION OF POWERLIFTING [video included]
THE EMERGING WOMENS' DIVISION OF POWERLIFTING [video included]
With the perspective of over a quarter century in the world of competitive powerlifting, I have never seen three, packed to the gills, flights of women-only in a non-international meet until this past December. The women’s division in powerlifting is emerging and that is great for the sport of powerlifting.
LOOKING BACK ON YOUR YEAR OF TRAINING [video included]
LOOKING BACK ON YOUR YEAR OF TRAINING [video included]
For “the herd,” the New Year brings them loping into the health club in droves with the hopes of, this time, sticking to it. But for you as a competitive powerlifter, the New Year is a time where you must critically examine a years’ worth of collective training programs and authentically assess where you are and where you want to be. It is only after sifting through the nuances that you can best develop your plan and take that plan through to fruition.
PAUSE SQUATS and REPS, POST MEET RE-SET
PAUSE SQUATS and REPS, POST MEET RE-SET
When coming back from a meet performance be it great, good, below average or a bomb-out, every lifter re-assesses. Let me restate that…every SMART lifter re-assesses.
CONTEST PREP/THE POWER OF THE TEAM
CONTEST PREP/THE POWER OF THE TEAM
As the meet approaches, the collective energy of a powerlifting gym crescendos up into somewhat of a feeding frenzy. This is the benefit of training with a group of likeminded lifters vs going it alone.
Do You Have the Guts to be a Successful Powerlifter?
Do You Have the Guts to be a Successful Powerlifter?
All the success in your lifting that stems from work you put in at the gym can be compromised, often significantly, by your failures outside of the gym.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN, PULLING THE SLACK OUT OF THE BAR???
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN, PULLING THE SLACK OUT OF THE BAR???
When lifting, you can “muscle up the weight,” you can “rip the bar off of the floor,” OR you can use your muscle AND physics and lift a significantly greater amount of weight. In powerlifting, that is the name of the game, lift the most amount of weight. So, the choice is just brute force, or brute force combined with Physics. That choice is up to you.
SUBMAXIMAL TRAINING
SUBMAXIMAL TRAINING
Like a race car, there are many gears to shift into when training. If you are limiting yourself to max effort, speed and de-load only, you are missing many of the gears that get you to your p.r. lifts.
The SUBCULTURE OF WOMEN'S POWERLIFTING
The SUBCULTURE OF WOMEN'S POWERLIFTING
Powerlifting is truly a subculture of the bigger world of all things weights. Within that subculture of powerlifting is yet another subculture and that is the hard core powerlifter. Zoom in yet another level and you have arguably the tiniest of subcultures, and that is the hard core woman’s powerlifting subculture.
THE BLEEDER!!!!!
THE BLEEDER!!!!!
Stick around a little while and you will see the shooting stars of the sport come and go. These are the lifters who go big, win big and burn out even bigger. Stick around for a little while longer in the sport and you will see the shooting stars come and go, over and over and over again. They just don’t last as their bodies can’t put up with the non-self-regulating abuse that is put upon them. Stick around a few decades and you will also note the longevity of the truly great lifters, the longevity of lifters like Dave Ricks, Ed Coan, Brian Schwab and Sioux-z’ of the world (all with 2+ decades in the competitive game at the top of their weight class and federation). What is an essential ingredient to their longevity and success???? SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE.

If it were easy, every big boy under the bar would squat a grand. The reality is, a four-digit-squat in a meet is one of those standards in powerlifting that everyone can agree, is a super-human feet of strength and always will be what separates the men from the boys.
